OCTAVIA QUARTET

OCTAVIA SAXOPHONE QUARTET

ANTONIO FELIPE, SOPRANO SAXOPHONE.

DAVID PONS, BARITONE SAXOPHONE.

DAVID RUBIO, ALTO SAXOPHONE.

VÍCTOR M. MANSILLA, TENOR SAXOPHONE.

The Octavia Saxophone Quartet played between 2008 and 2017, and is made up of alumni of the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música. They wished to take the performance potential of the saxophone quartet to the highest level. During these years, they worked intensely on two tasks: developing a demanding and complete repertoire to take part in important music competitions on National and International stages, and preparing concerts in theatres and auditoriums in Spain, France, Italy, and Scotland (including the World Congress of Saxophone in Saint Andrews).

They have won several awards over the course of their musical career, including First place in the International Yahama competition for Saxophone quartets (March 2009), Second place in the XII Young Musician’s Competition Pedro Bote in Villafranca de los Barros (November 2009), Third place in the XIII Young Musician’s Competition Pedro Bote in Villafranca de los Barros (November 2010), Special Diploma in the International Music Tournament of Verona (September 2010), First place in the XIX International Music Competition Josep Mirabent i Magrans (Barcelona 2011) and Special Mention in the Masterplayer Competition in Switzerland (2012).

As a result of their hard work and extended repertoire, they decided to record their first CD called Original, in 2015. This disk contains the specific repertoire of the training of classical composers, such as Rivier and Pierné, and contemporary composers such as César Camarero (Premio Nacional de Música), Ida Gotkovsky, Thierry Escaich or Piet Swerts, who they worked with during the recording phase.

Saxophonists generally belong to a special class of musicians; they take care of the work in the premieres meticulously and are always ready to discover new repertoires. Personally I have been fortunate to work with some of the best saxophonists in Spain and I must admit that, of all the rehearsal sessions I have had with the members of the Octavia Saxophone Quartet, they have become a great experience at the highest level, a creative process between performers and composer from which highly fruitful ideas and musical experiences have always sprouted. This CD is a privileged sample of the care they put into all their projects. (César Camarero. Composer)

A really very good performance. Very energetic, dynamic, with well-connected tempos but at the same time an expressive performance with a wide variety of colors. (Thierry Escaich. Composer)

This recording confirms the musicality with which you play as a quartet. I love your sound and the musicality you get in all the little details; the ideal interpretation of this piece can only be achieved if the small motifs and the sensitivity of its notes are underlined. Congratulations on this beautiful recording that I am very satisfied with. (Piet Swerts. Composer)
